Pirates win 7th straight KeysNews.com

CITIZEN STAFF
TAVERNIER -- The Bone Island Pirates improved its win streak to seven straight games on Saturday night with a 28-6 victory over Keys rival the South Florida Sharks. Playing on the Coral Shores High campus the Pirates got out to an early lead and never relinquished, keeping control of the Southeast Florida League's Southeast Division.

"They added some beef and some speed," Pirates owner/coach Angel Torres said about the Sharks (2-6). "We still controlled the game, but there was a bit of a difference. Either way it was our game until the fourth quarter when we allowed them to score."

+40 Baseball league started its 2nd season

CITIZEN STAFF
KEY WEST - The second season of the Jewfish League got underway last Friday night with the same match-ups as the inaugural season opener, but with outrageously different results.

The fellers in blue, the Jaibas, who ended the first season in near the bottom of the heap, third place, gaffed the (red) Snappers, 25-13, who recently swam away with the first place hardware in season one.

The Jaibas jumped out to a quick - in over-40 softball means snail's pace - three-run lead thanks to John "Ghostface Killah" Baltzell who delivered a three-run egg roll into Tong's Garden parking lot.

The Snappers crushed that lead - with their dentures - putting up eight runs as every player in red registered a hit in the bottom of the first. The blue bellies scratched and crawled out seven in their next at bat, and would not relinquish the lead again.

Games back on at DeWitt Robert Field after hiatus | KeysNews.com

As printed in the Key West Citizen!

KEY WEST - After a five month hiatus, the Key West Men's Softball League will resume Tuesday, Feb. 9 at DeWitt Roberts Field in the Wickers Complex.

League president Bobby Lowe said they have 10 teams signed up and are expecting more participants for the 20-game season.

"Coaches from all new and returning teams in the 2010 season are requested to attend a meeting at 6:30 on Tuesday, January 26 at the Wickers Complex," Lowe said.

The first season will run to early April with playoffs commencing at the end of regular season. The second season starts after first season playoffs with another 20 games which will end in July. Entry fee is $700 per team, which includes insurance for each player, which is required by the City of Key West. Games will be played Monday through Thursday nights with games starting at 6:30, 7:45 and 9 p.m.

Lowe said depending on the number of teams signed up will dictate the number of leagues.

"It's very important that all coaches show up Tuesday night so they can determine the number of leagues and vote on the number of leagues," Lowe said. "Ideally we'd like to have 15 teams but we'll take as many as we can get. I've had some interest from military teams and would be thrilled with 15."

For additional information, contact Lowe at 360-2537.

Keys soccer players receive all-state honors

Keys soccer players receive all-state honors

As you might know SOCCER is my favorite pastime activity - playing, coaching and refereeing soccer here in Key West for the past 30 years - it is great to see how soccer has grown up and down the Florida Keys since the early days of our existence.

Click on the "Headline" above and read about the Coral Shores HS girls and their accomplishment in Saturday's KeyNoter.

More to come about Jasmine Patersen, a freshman out of Coral Shores who will join the U-15 national team in April.
I certainly wish her all the best and am looking forward to see her play here against the Lady Conchs next season.

Power corrupts - but we need electricity!

Just in case you were wondering where the last entries disappeared to, don't worry - there weren't any.
As it sometimes goes in real life, if you can't pay/afford the bills one gets cut off, as it was in my case. Though it was beloved COMCAST not Keys Power I had to do without. Sorry about that. I'll try to do better next time.

The Key West Men Softball league came to an exciting end on Sunday, March 22, with Truman&Chevron winning the 2008 Winter League. Congratulations!
Click on the LINK in the sidebar (Men's Softball) to get the final stats on their web page. Perhaps I missed any articles written about it in the Key West Citizen.

Enough for now, I'm just glad to be again "connected"!
Remember - STAY ACTIVE - STAY HEALTHY

There's plenty to read about the local scenes in the Citizen, but don't forget the Bocce League starts Monday, and there's a few other mentioned at the Daily Sports Telegraph!

Lady Conchs' season comes to emotional end |

Lady Conchs' season comes to emotional end

It just wasn't meant to be -
The Key West Lady Conchs appeared to be moving into the regional 16-4A Finals but McCarthy High School team had their own vision of the future.

Read what Ron Cook had to say about the game in today's Key West Citizen by following the link in the headline.

It was a sad ending for the Conchs Senior Varsity players as their hopes and goals were set high and believed they would make it to the regional finals.

But in all what they have brought to the team over the past season will continue and the players as well as spectator are now waiting for the semi-final jinx to end.
