Pirates win 7th straight KeysNews.com

CITIZEN STAFF
TAVERNIER -- The Bone Island Pirates improved its win streak to seven straight games on Saturday night with a 28-6 victory over Keys rival the South Florida Sharks. Playing on the Coral Shores High campus the Pirates got out to an early lead and never relinquished, keeping control of the Southeast Florida League's Southeast Division.

"They added some beef and some speed," Pirates owner/coach Angel Torres said about the Sharks (2-6). "We still controlled the game, but there was a bit of a difference. Either way it was our game until the fourth quarter when we allowed them to score."

+40 Baseball league started its 2nd season

CITIZEN STAFF
KEY WEST - The second season of the Jewfish League got underway last Friday night with the same match-ups as the inaugural season opener, but with outrageously different results.

The fellers in blue, the Jaibas, who ended the first season in near the bottom of the heap, third place, gaffed the (red) Snappers, 25-13, who recently swam away with the first place hardware in season one.

The Jaibas jumped out to a quick - in over-40 softball means snail's pace - three-run lead thanks to John "Ghostface Killah" Baltzell who delivered a three-run egg roll into Tong's Garden parking lot.

The Snappers crushed that lead - with their dentures - putting up eight runs as every player in red registered a hit in the bottom of the first. The blue bellies scratched and crawled out seven in their next at bat, and would not relinquish the lead again.

Games back on at DeWitt Robert Field after hiatus | KeysNews.com

As printed in the Key West Citizen!

KEY WEST - After a five month hiatus, the Key West Men's Softball League will resume Tuesday, Feb. 9 at DeWitt Roberts Field in the Wickers Complex.

League president Bobby Lowe said they have 10 teams signed up and are expecting more participants for the 20-game season.

"Coaches from all new and returning teams in the 2010 season are requested to attend a meeting at 6:30 on Tuesday, January 26 at the Wickers Complex," Lowe said.

The first season will run to early April with playoffs commencing at the end of regular season. The second season starts after first season playoffs with another 20 games which will end in July. Entry fee is $700 per team, which includes insurance for each player, which is required by the City of Key West. Games will be played Monday through Thursday nights with games starting at 6:30, 7:45 and 9 p.m.

Lowe said depending on the number of teams signed up will dictate the number of leagues.

"It's very important that all coaches show up Tuesday night so they can determine the number of leagues and vote on the number of leagues," Lowe said. "Ideally we'd like to have 15 teams but we'll take as many as we can get. I've had some interest from military teams and would be thrilled with 15."

For additional information, contact Lowe at 360-2537.

KW hangs tough on soggy field | KeysNews.com

Ron Cook writes about the "Best Game" of the season, Coach Paul mentioned the new formatted defense kept the team in the game, and now I wonder if I was even there to witness the same game.

During the game I kept myself asking how the Lady Conchs won so many games by mercy rule.
Guess I just watched a different game yesterday than the Citizen writer, as at no time during the entire game was Key West dominating, instead the few goalchances they had came on quick counter attacks, on 2 of which the Lady Conchs should have scored.

It was an unengaged game by the local team and some of the players had to be disciplined by the Referees as skill was compensated by unnecessary hard physical play.

But as they say, it's right here in Black and White in the Citizen's Sports Page, and consequently that's what counts.

Conchs pound Dolphins with second-half surge | KeysNews.com

This is one game I had to miss - One article mentioned the game starts at 4pm the other said 5pm.
I took the chance @ 4 - no activity; tried again shortly after 5, the ticket booth was set up yet nobody around on the field.
That indicated another delay so I've decided to return home after picking up the medicine at Walgreens my wife was waiting for.

I really wanted to watch the game, as Marathon, as young as their team is, there's always something "vibrant" in the air during the game vs. the County rival.

In the end the Kicking Conchs prevailed with a 6:1 victory.

Get last night's High School Soccer scores - a convincing W in the girls and boys teams column.
The win last night by the HS Kicking Conchs was especially sweet as they had lost 1:2 in the first meeting and remember those stunned faces.

How does one get enough game practice when a team can only play 1 half, then second half is called due to the Mercy Rule?
11:0 looks quite good for only 45 minutes. And since the rules say at least 1 half of the game has to be played, I challenge the girls to top that score.

Junior Football Leagues finally complete first full week of games

As every Friday, the Citizen publishes the complete story of the Junior Football League with pics etc. Although in this electronic edition of the column I unfortunately miss these pics.

Perhaps the Citizen ought to take a closer look at the the KeyNoter's new and much improved version of their printed and electronic version of local sports.
One team still remains unbeaten |

When news came out about the league being formed, I seriously considered to sign up with the league. And without a doubt, I think I would have been the oldest Rookie at 61 to be playing a new sport. Don't think "Cabbage Bar Ball" from years back at Peary Court would have disqualified me from being called a Rookie.

Anyway...

In the newly formed "Jewfish League" - (a Men's +40 Softball league) one team sits on top of the league alone.

Conchs stay unbeaten, match 2008 win total

The past 2 season I wondered how long the KW High School will keep their Volleyball team, or rather how many girls will sign up for the program, but it soon proved to be an irrelevant question as the girls do love their sport and that winning isn't everything.

Now the young team under Coach Jessy Hulme are on their way to become a competetive team and their first big test will come on Thursday against Mater Academy.
